Dear Gatherers,
Is it really August?
It's been five months and we still have no idea how long this pandemic will go on.
The fact that the kids are not going back to school is hard to stomach for many of us.
We worry about their intellectual and social growth, their isolation and boredom.
As adults we are experiencing many of the same emotions but in an effort to be strong, we tend not to share our struggles, but instead plow ahead, focusing on what we are grateful for and hoping against hope that our lives will return to normal at some point. The problem is that we really are in the midst of one of the hardest times in our lives.
We are scared, tired, uncertain, bored, floating in a boat without an oar.
Of course, there are lessons to learn, stories we will share when this is over, but right now, it's hard.
Let yourself experience that. Grieve. Cry. Rage.
Feelings need to be felt and luckily they do dissipate. You can always take a moment, get quiet and connect with the peaceful, knowing and loving place inside of you, which thankfully, is always available to us.
For me, I need to listen to voices that are both authentic and inspiring. I heard Michelle Obama's inaugural episode of her podcast where she interviewed her husband. I couldn't stop smiling as I listened to the two of them, their banter, jokes, love and commonality so evident. They talked a lot about the importance of community, having something bigger than either one of them individually.
Most of us are aching for community right now, and it's up to us to create whatever we can to give us that feeling of being part of something, being included, known, belonging. Maybe it's our family right now, or a few friends. It may feel small, but perhaps it's more powerful.
Whatever community means to us, this is a time to embrace what or who makes us feel safe and loved. The beauty of real community is that we are naturally drawn to give to others what we want and need.
The world is hurting right now and how we can make a real difference in our communities feels daunting.
I heed the words of Mother Theresa who says "I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples." So, cast your stones of love, presence, generosity and understanding and see how they ripple out.
The wonderful poet and philosopher Yung Pueblo concurs.
"Humans affect each other deeply in ways that the world at large is just beginning to understand... when we heal ourselves it gives strength to those who need more support to take on their own personal healing journey.what we do reverberates through time and space- like a rock thrown into a lake, the circles it creates move in all different directions."
So keep being good to yourselves, be patient and compassionate and let up on the judgements and self-criticism.
My commitment is to nurture you in ways you don't nurture yourself. That is the rock I am throwing in to the lake, sending ripples of love and support out to all of you, particularly all the women who give, give, give and give to everyone else. I know how exhausting it is.
Our Sunday Gatherings are an opportunity for you to give yourself an hour during the week to get quiet, reflect, meet supportive women and meditate together. Getting calm allows us to think clearer and to respond to life, rather than just react to it.
Join us this Sunday and see for yourself. https://www.thegathering-la.com/events-1/sunday-hour-of-calm
